Nurturing innovation in Screen Technologies

Based at the University of York, Creativity Lab provides a dynamic space for businesses, academics and students to explore emerging technologies within the screen industries. The lab offers valuable opportunities for engagement and learning, along with specialised training, workshops and masterclasses conducted by industry experts in their cutting-edge facilities. Whether delving into Virtual Reality, Podcasting, 3D Design, or Video Editing, Creativity Lab serves as a hub for innovative exploration and skill development.

Poster, pamphlets and public perception

The Creativity Lab had a lot of cutting edge technology and resources to offer but lacked any sort of a visual presence in the library. Design & Print Solutions were engaged to produce leaflets, signage and bespoke posters to remedy this situation.

The posters had to combine a disparate selection of visuals provided by the Lab covering such topics as podcasting, 3D scanning, printing, modelling and VR. So taking inspiration from The Bauhaus, Constructivism and Art Deco we created bold geometric designs into which the assets were judiciously placed. Thus the suite of Creativity Lab posters were born. They were such a hit with both staff and students that a second iteration was requested just a few months later which we were happy to produce.

York Conferences and Events

Rebrand and restart

In 2023, having made it through some hard times during the pandemic, York Conferences decided it was time to take stock, reassess, rebrand, and head boldly into the future with a positive attitude and an accompanying brand new look and feel.

Design & Print Solutions created the logo/wordmark and bespoke YCE skyline illustration in-house.

Vibrance and style

After consultation and conversation with all concerned parties we presented a number of potential visual ways forward that suitably represented their values and goals. After a number of iterations and meetings, once a final logo and style were agreed and finalised, we were also engaged to completely rebuild the now 'York Conferences and Events' website from the ground up. This included a bespoke filtering and search facility.

The Guildhall

The Guildhall is an extraordinary venue in the heart of York City Centre built in 1445. Now under the management of the University of York and providing services for a wide range of events including conferences, exhibitions, weddings, sporting events and holiday accommodation. It also offers office space and a café open to the public.

Branding, logo and skyline illustration

Design & Print Solutions were engaged to produce branding for the refurbished and renovated Guildhall. Sitting under the University of York and managed by York Conferences the new identity had to reflect its place in the management structure, its physical location in the heart of York City, its heritage, modern office space, facilities and aspirations for local business and enterprise. A combination of famous York landmarks, University assets, traditional and modern typefaces come together to produce an instantly iconic identity. The bespoke skyline illustration shows the Guildhall's prised location in the very centre of York City. The very epicentre of everything important and noteworthy happening in the north of England today.

Starting from scratch

With the upcoming opening of the new, purpose built, state-of-the-art nursery on Campus East at the University of York, we were engaged to create company branding and a commercial website.

Designing a giant

Despite the massive scale of the final installation, our illustration still started life with a simple pencil and piece of paper...

York LNER Community Stadium

The LNER Community Stadium, home of York City FC and York City Knights RLFC, as well as leisure facilities and cinemas, now has a grand façade to grace its architecture. The work of our multi talented artist, Jon Starkey, was commissioned by stadium sponsors LNER, and the contract, won by Design Solutions, was undertaken for completion by March 2020.

The following images give you an insight into the development process, from sketch, to screen, to stadium. Visitors to the site, whilst queueing for tickets, are presented with this monumental illustrationn.

Assuring Autonomy – Annual Report

Assuring Autonomy

Annual Report Design

We've been delighted to design a number of Annual Reports for Assuring Autonomy, a partnership between Lloyd's Register Foundation and the University of York. The partnership lead global, state-of-the-art research to provide those in the industry with guidance in assuring and regulating robotics and autonomous systems. We brought the research to life with careful and consistent use of colour and illustrations, creatively interpreting data into reader friendly designs. We also had the pleasure of printing these reports, implementing Spot UV for a striking end product.

Digital Design

We have also had the opportunity to develop digital designs for Assuring Autonomy, including templates crafted using the brand's identity. Our implementation of solid graphic design principles within these templates allows the end user to create professional presentations and documents with ease.

UoY Careers Department

Shape your future

Created for the University of York’s Careers Department, the “Shape your future” campaign consists of Photoshop composite images and digital illustrations used across posters, brochures and digital signage.

This project was visually-driven with striking images forming the core content. The designs featured 3D typography combined with high quality photography to create clear and easy to read composite images. These images were used in conjunction with the University’s branding to create eye catching marketing materials enhancing the campaign and supporting their marketing strategy.

Go Global

Working with the Centre for Global Programmes at the University of York we designed a campaign to promote potential destinations for year abroad students and exchange students. This campaign utilised striking typography to create simple intriguing designs. Our inspiring concepts were used to develop teaser posters, floor stickers and roller banners to promote the campaign pre-launch.

Be Water Aware

Being asked to create an eye catching vehicle wrap to head up the York Water Aware campaign was a great honour.

Working with the University Fire Response unit, the Fire and Rescue service as well as other interested parties, we came up with this graphic. Featuring local landmarks, and of course, the river.
